Plates with wide rims are a style associated with the West more than Japan. However, Miyuki Koizumi’s rimmed plates attract us with the contrast between the warm surface of Japanese clay and the clear, refreshing line that separates the well from the rim. Ms. Koizumi produces each of her works by hand on a potter’s wheel, using clay for stoneware as a raw material. Though the plates may appear austere at first glance, there is a gentleness to them that reflects the refined sensibility of the artist. Her designs are borderless, matching any cuisine, whether Japanese-style or Western-style.
