The city of Toki, in Gifu Prefecture, has long thrived as one of Japan’s major pottery production centers. The maker of the Oribe line creates pots, rice bowls and other items with a machine wheel using a method known as mizugote. Though the potter has produced dishes in many different shapes with a variety of glazes, he now focuses mainly on dishes coated with Oribe glaze.
What makes Japanese pottery particularly attractive is the warm, soft texture of the clay and the tasteful colors of the glazes. Japanese ceramic connoisseurs have a tradition of seeing beautiful natural landscapes in the changing shades of color produced by the flow of glaze, likening them to the depths of mountains or the sea.
