Iwai is a lacquerware plate with a large foot—a design that is centuries old. In Japan, the shape is reminiscent of a ritual vessel, but in the West, it resembles the style of a compote dish for serving fruit.
Iwai is manufactured in the Yamanaka district of Ishikawa Prefecture, which specializes in lathe processing. The brush marks across the surface of the well bring out the heft and presence of the lacquerware.
