Yoshino

The Yoshino region of Nara Prefecture is regarded as the oldest forestry area in Japan. For more than 500 years, techniques for producing exceptionally beautiful timber have been cultivated there through a harmonious relationship between people and the forest. Through meticulous thinning carried out over long periods of time, the trees grow slowly, developing fine, tightly grained wood with narrow annual rings. Yoshino cedar is distinguished by its straight, refined grain, its minimal knots, and the elegant hue of its heartwood.

Using this graceful Yoshino cedar, we have crafted cups and plates. Each piece is carefully turned by hand on a traditional wood lathe by artisans in Yoshino. The collection is available in two finishes: a natural wood finish that preserves the cedar’s pure, understated beauty, and a wiped lacquer finish in which layers of urushi are applied to enhance water resistance and durability.

Unlike ceramic or glass vessels, wooden cups have low thermal conductivity. They are less prone to condensation when holding cold drinks, and when filled with hot beverages, the cup does not become too hot to hold, while helping the drink retain its warmth. The plate likewise offers excellent insulation and heat retention, and its natural ability to regulate humidity makes it especially well-suited for serving bread.
