“Smiling is the joy of living.”

A sentence in a book I had just been reading catches my attention. Hideo Kobayashi is talking about Bergson’s critique, but I once again recall the meaning of the words that he speaks and what I have thought about and created as an artist in the past. Are there things about me that changed and did not change in the time leading up to the present? What have I seen, thought, and given form to?

Have I been smiling?

My existence is in between this land and sky. While in between land and sky, I have been conscious of my experiences and actions and handled extremely personal affairs in my creations. It is possible that they are things that anyone experiences similarly and the more common they are, the more they pass by without being sensed. It seems that I am doing to these affairs something similar to scooping up water with my hands.

It is possible that I may have been smiling.

The reason that I have been able to continue my creations up until now may lie in that. I will continue to be interested in trivial affairs and think about things that are visible and invisible. Pieces that I presented here 16 years ago, alongside things that took shape after experiences that I had after then. I will continue to exist in between land and sky and from now on, I will likely be conscious of smiling as well.
